putting the commercialism back in Christmas
So I’ve seen lots of postings from various people all about how upset they are about how no one believes in the spirit of Christmas anymore, and how disappointing it is to drive past the scrooges who don’t put up lifhts, or do anything festive.
Quite frankly, I’m as sick of people moaning about not having Christmas spirit as I am of Christmas. 50 years ago, you went out, chopped down a tree on Christmas Eve, brought it home, and spent the evening, AND the following day with your family. Quite often gifts were handmade, not expensive or fancy, but meaningful.
Normally, by this time of year, Christmas music is in all the stores, there’s a crispness in the air, and I’m looking forward to time with family and friends. Admittedly in the past few years, the stores being full of Christmas trees before Thanksgiving was past was getting obnoxious. This year however, when I was shopping for a halloween costume, the Christmas goodies were already out at Target.
And now the web is full of people whining about how people aren’t spending hundreds of dollars on Christmas decorations, and aren’t full of the Christmas spirit. If they were really concerned about Christmas spirit, they wouldn’t be whining about all of the scrooges, they’d be doing something about it. Take them a poster, give them a card, take them a Christmas sprig. Do something in the spirit of giving, because THAT is what Christmas is. To the Christians, a celebration of their lord and savior, He who gave all for the saving of their souls.
To many cultures, a night of family, and giving, a celebration of the turning of winter and the start of a new year. Christmas is not about a race to see who can buy the biggest and the best gift, and who can spend the most money and who can have the biggest light display.
What made me decided to do this tonight? I was watching tv, and a Kay’s commercial came on. You know the one, where the sterotypical jew asks his girlfriend if she believes in Santa Claus before giving her a huge diamond.
Quite frankly, I’ve never thought there needs to be a reason to give someone a gift. Too bad today’s kids grow up only thinking of what they can get out of Christmas, and not what the spirit of Christmas really is.
